P009 → Ærø 2024

From Engine Factory to ART AND CULTURE

In Søby on the island of Ærø, there lies an old engine workshop. The space within the workshop has a unique atmosphere and tranquility, enhanced by its high ceilings and abundant natural light, creating a spacious and inviting environment. The raw and weathered walls tell the story of the time that has passed since Arthur originally founded the place and began producing ship engines. The space narrates its own history through the wear and remnants from its time as a machine factory—a history that is especially important to preserve in the desire to transform the place.

The green color on the old walls is repeated throughout the workshop and is beginning to peel away, like a creature shedding its skin. This delicate green hue gives the place its character and beautifully complements the red steel of the beams and machinery.

Visualization – A repurposed staircase leads up to an existing loft space, with the potential for a seating area. Seating made from recycled ferry seats is placed on a new plywood platform. A steel railing connects the staircase and ensures safety in the seating area.
